Australia's privacy law is set to be overhauled … an important heads-up to the many businesses and organisations in Australia that are required to comply with the Privacy Act 1988, or have decided that it is in their own interest to voluntarily comply.

The Privacy Act 1988 regulates the way individuals' personal information is handled.  Compliance is mandatory for businesses with over $3M annual turnover (subject to some exceptions), and is also mandatory for some smaller businesses regardless of annual turnover.  For further details on which businesses must comply, see https://www.oaic.gov.au/privacy/privacy-legislation/the-privacy-act/rights-and-responsibilities

The Australian Government has recognised that this Act was written before the modern digital age, and is working towards a major update.

This ABC article talks about some things to expect from that update: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-09-12/albanese-government-will-outlaw-doxxing/104340372

BTW, does anyone else find it a bit odd that the ABC marked this article as being about "Internet Culture" rather than business, privacy, cybersecurity or something else closer to the mark?
