If you’d like to find out more about the criminal gangs targeting Australian businesses, then check out this article from the respected CSO Online news and analysis publication:
These criminal gangs break into Australian businesses, steal highly sensitive data and/or grind operations to a halt by locking owners out of their own IT systems. They then demand a large ransom to restore the IT systems and/or to not sell that information or leak it to the public.
Last year I announced the most comprehensive list of Australian companies and organisations that have been breached. This list identifies 120 organisations (mostly private companies) in 2025 alone, representing only a fraction of the estimated 3,000 that Australian government statistics suggest based on company self-reporting. Many gangs that you see in this list feature in this rogues gallery.
Many SMEs and SMBs do not survive a major breach. Even if they have cyber insurance, the disruption to operations and/or the reputational damage is too severe, regardless of whether they have cybersecurity insurance or not. Many customers cease doing business with a business that has been breached, due to valid concerns about the security risk of that supplier to their own business.
